Overview

In my opinion, art is something created by someone to have meaning and or to be appreciated and is then appreciated, experienced, and enjoyed by someone else. A video game is just that: a game designer creates the game, sculpts and molds it. Instead of a paintbrush and paints, the game designer’s artist tools are a computer interface and a combination of code and 1’s and 0’s. The gamer dosnt have to go to a museum or gallery to appreciate the art that is the videogame, they can enjoy it almost anywhere. Moreover, unlike the art patron, sipping wine and eating cheese whilst staring at canvas, the gamer explores and experience the art in three dimensions. As they move through the work they have new experiences that can alter how the view the work as a whole or that particular section.
In my opinion, video games, as an art form provide a greater experience for the gamer than other forms of art. With a painting, a person can view the painting, read about its history, maybe ask the artist why the painting is the way it is. With literature, a person can read a book, read criticism of the book, ask the author what they were thinking. With film, a person can view a film, read and view critisim about the film, ask the creators why things are they way they are. With video games, a person can do everything I listed above but the gamer can do things the other art viewers can not. The gamer can have a unique experience; everyone sees the same thing in a movie and reads relatively the same words in a book. Two people can play the same game and have completely different experiences because video games are open ended and normally involve choice. Moreover, the gamer experience the art in an interactive way, they can often or edit the game to make it the way they want, changing their experience with the art.
